Do you suffer with Hallow-giving-mas?

When I was a kid the holiday’s seemed structured, set.

Come October you started thinking about the costume that you would “make” not buy. My Dad and I would find costume books at the library and then he would begin acquiring the items needed to make it.

Next, hang up the paper decorations in the windows. I always felt very lucky because we had lots of windows in our living room and each window had at least TWO decorations. It almost felt like overkill compared to the neighbors.

Of course we’d carve pumpkins from our own imaginations as opposed to a computer printed template and we’d race home after school to put on our costumes. Heck, sometimes we even wore our costumes to school for a Halloween parade in the gym.

And when it came to Trick-or-Treating……you didn’t stop till either your bag was full or ALL the porch lights were out. I don’t remember there being a curfew? Maybe there was and my parents led the rebellion because I swear we’d trick-or-treat way past 8pm!

All this to say, yes I’m over 40, but more importantly, I’m suffering from Hallow-giving-mas!!

The traditional timelines for each holiday are gone. I find the lines blurred. My kids came home from school to an entryway decked out with skulls only to be greeted by my collection of turkeys on the fireplace mantel.

I’m not saying it’s right or wrong. I’m just sayin’ this allows me to decorate for Halloween AND Thanksgiving before I put my Christmas tree up in a few weeks.

Is it weird to decorate with Turkeys for Thanksgiving? Really, that would be like decorating with hot dogs for July 4th!

  1. Well, I’m weird too then because I have turkeys and squirrels for thanksgiving sitting next to my ghost and goblins :). If we don’t … Thanksgiving gets left in the dust. This way we enjoy all the holidays.

I actually think it would be funny to have hot dog décor for July 4th. Good idea! There is nothing wrong with turkeys for Thanksgiving décor. I don’t think it is as popular now, but lots of people had cows for decorations in their kitchens or around the house. When you think about it, how creepy is that? Irene has lots of chickens and they still eat them. There you go.

    1. Oh my gosh Val – that is hilarious. And true!! Especially the cow motif! Not sure we really think these things through. Happy Fall!
