“I want to punch you in the face but I love Jesus”

This is, hands down my favorite book title ever!

Once you know why, I have a feeling you will love it too.

And if you’re a woman you most likely think this every single month during a certain time.  (wink, wink)

It’s  the title of a hilarious truth-telling book written by the fabulously funny Sherri Lynn.

Guys, you might find the book intriguing, but ladies, make no mistake this book is about you and for you. (Although it might be helpful for the guys in your life to read).

Here let me give you the full title and you’ll understand.

“I want to punch you in the face but I love Jesus, The Ultimate PMS companion book”

See I told you.  You love it right?!  Wait until you read it.

In the book Sherri tackles the wonder, mystery and beauty of the one thing ALL women share when they come of baby bearing age.  Ok, maybe it’s more about the curse of the thing we all share!

For example, here is one suggestion she gives for getting through horrible PMS: “Imagine yourself on your first day in heaven walking right up to Eve and punching her dead in the mouth.”

If you laughed out loud join the club.

Sherri’s book is filled with humor but more importantly, it’s filled with HOPE.

I recently had the honor of speaking at a women’s event with Sherri and after experiencing her authenticity and humor (I told her she was my spirit animal because we share the same sense of humor – at the time it seemed appropriate and made sense but now it sounds a little weird).

After reading the book I asked Sherri if I could feature her book along with a few interview questions on my blog.  This is what followed:

Do you really thing punching Eve will help?

Ha! Probably not. But the thought of it helps and keeps me from thinking about punching others. Some days that’s really all I’m looking for.

Why in the world did you write a book about PMS???

I struggled so much when I was younger. I honestly thought I was backsliding every 28 days. It was brutal. It took me years to realize there was something physical happening to me and that God was not judging me spiritually because of it. Once I came to grips with that, I thought “maybe other women need to know that, too?”

At the very least I wanted women to know they weren’t alone. That’s one of the reasons why I have so many comments from other women in the book. I wanted whoever was reading the book to feel an instant sense of community.

What else should “the church” be talking about?

I don’t know if it’s what the church should be talking about but rather how the church should be talking about things. How matters! Growing up I know people talked about issues in the church but it was always on the other side of victory. They were already awesome. It made me feel like I was the only one struggling. I hated that feeling.

How do you think your book is being received? (What kind of reactions/feedback have you heard from women who have read it?)

It’s been great. So many women have just simply said “thank you”. They know they’re not alone.

Do you think the book would be a great gift idea for a girl just starting her “journey into womanhood”, perhaps in a nice basket with chocolate, sweat pants and personal hygiene products?  Maybe with a gift tag that says “Welcome to Hell, you’re not alone!”?

I know women who have done that. I think it’s a good thing to read with a young girl…she hasn’t gone through it yet so you don’t want to terrify her. But it’s good to help her laugh at what’s coming down the pike. She’ll know it’s going to be OK and that she’s not alone. Hopefully it will keep her from suffering in silence and shame.

One final thought, as I was reading Sherri’s book it was yet another reminder that our stories help one another.

No matter what you are going through, someone else has gone through it too.  You are not alone.

Let’s have the courage to share our stories.

The messy, painful, embarrassing, sad, vulnerable stories that make up this thing called life.  It’s not easy and it doesn’t come naturally but your story may be just the thing that gives someone else HOPE.

Till the next time,

Julie B.

* Thank you Sherri!  I appreciate your humor and honesty.
